Solstice Night Woods Walk

Embrace the winter dark and expand your senses on the winter solstice!

Led by the Land Trust’s Conservation Director, Gina King, and Community Education Coordinator, Megan Rohrssen, this hour-long guided walk at Rockaway Bluff Preserve* is a unique opportunity to observe nocturnal wildlife, view the Seattle skyline, and experience the forest in a new way after dark.

Enjoy complimentary hot cocoa and cider following the walk. Red-light flashlights will be provided to better preserve your night vision.

REGISTRATION IS NOW FULL. Thank you all for your interest! Reach out to [email protected] to get on our list for future night walk opportunities.

Please register for one session only.

WHO: Open to all. We ask that you not bring dogs in order to minimize disturbance to the Preserve’s habitat and inhabitants. Children are welcome under close adult supervision. Groups are limited to 10 total attendees per session.

WHERE: Meet at the entrance to Rockaway Bluff Preserve. Carpool if possible because parking is limited. Please park by the mailboxes at the bend in Creosote Hill Rd, and avoid blocking any driveways.

Reach out to Megan to get on our list for future opportunities.

WHAT TO BRING: Clothing appropriate for the weather, especially sturdy, water-resistant shoes, and a reusable cup for hot cocoa/cider. Red-light flashlights will be provided— if you bring a regular flashlight, you are welcome to use it getting to and from the Preserve entrance but please leave it off for the duration of the walk.

WEATHER: The walks will go on rain or shine. However, we may need to cancel if high winds are expected. In case of high wind cancellation, we will reschedule for Saturday, December 28th.

ABOUT THE PRESERVE: The trails at the preserve are flat with largely even terrain. Protected through our Stand for the Land Movement, Rockaway Bluff Preserve features 45 acres of mature intact upland forest, wetlands, and a seasonal stream. This area contains vital nesting habitat, providing critical refuge for numerous important species, including pileated woodpeckers, salamanders, bats, Humboldt’s flying squirrels, and over 80 species of birds.

*NOTE: Rockaway Bluff Preserve is open to the public daily from dawn to dusk. Outside of this guided event, please do not use the trails at night to avoid disturbing wildlife.
